Nature speaks to us. It is not through oral or written communication, but in feedback loops. 2020 was weird in many ways for the whole world. We started the year with hopes of a new prosperous decade. We ended thinking we had aged a decade within one year. Humans can muffle problems, but only for so long. When the forces become strong enough to rip that tape off nature’s mouth, we must finally listen to the ugly problems we’ve silenced.
When I speak of nature, I include not only what I would consider mother nature, but human nature as well.
The virus was the first wake up call. At best, it spoke to issues underlying the current structure of globalism. At worst, it spoke to a potentially viable way to control the masses through fear and isolation, and to dismantle economic systems.
Then came the protests and eventual riots stemming from the murder/death (more on this distinction in future post) of George Floyd. “Violence is the voice of the unheard” led to more death and destruction. This also became a global event. Was this nature finally yelling at us? And who are we supposed to believe when trying to find resolution?
Everything that came with the US elections, and its continuing side effects (but that’s for a 2021 year in review post). Did the people finally speak on election day? Or was there more silencing? Are we just deferring the inevitable scolding nature has in store for us?
At the end of 2020, I’ve gained a better appreciation for listening, and to hear what nature is trying to tell us, before it blows my ear drums out in rebuke.
